Geocaching

Gary Grady in Cuchara writes: Looking for a great individual or family activity? Geocaching is an outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. You use a GPS device to navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location. Some of the locations are called “biocaches” because they are natural formations instead of a container hidden by someone. The Cuchara Valley has a number of biocaches as well as geocaches.

Geocaching is a great family activity and is free. Anyone of any age can get started by going to the website, www.geocaching.com. Once you register there for the free basic membership you can go to the “Hide & Seek a Cache” page and enter any zip code.

About a dozen geocaches are hidden in the valley or nearby. Pick any geocache from the list on the web site and click on its name. Enter the coordinates of the geocache into your GPS Device and start heading to them. You will not need to enter the coordinates in the phone app, and it will actually help you navigate to the geocache with a compass and indicate how far you are from it

When you find the geocache, sign the logbook that is hidden with it and return the geocache to its original location. Some of the geocaches have small trinkets you can swap for. Take one from the container and leave another in its place. You can then share your geocaching stories and photos online.

The only things necessary to start are a free membership to learn the locations, GPS device or a cell phone with a geocache app.
