Job Description – Library Assistant

The Library Assistant actively assists library users with finding and using all library resources while managing the circulation desk. Technology troubleshooting for both Library and patron devices is an important component of this position. The Library Assistant will also provide support to the Library Director and other library staff by performing a wide range of administrative and backroom library tasks. This role requires diverse skills with an emphasis on excellent customer service. Must possess strong communication skills, follow instructions accurately, help patrons with general library inquiries, and support various library operations. The Library Assistant position at La Veta Public Library is currently a part-time, year round position.
Circulation Duties:
- Assist library users in locating and using library resources, including the online catalog, public computers, digital services and variously-formatted materials.
- Provide readers’ advisory to customers.
- Resolve patron complaints in a positive manner consistent with library policies and procedures.
- Make contact and follow up with patrons concerning overdue materials.
- Ensure consistency of library services by providing daily updates to staff.
- Actively participate in merchandising library’s collections and services, particularly when working with users one-on-one.
- Provide instruction and assistance to patrons in the use of library technology and electronic resources.
- Generate requests for, and track progress of, Interlibrary Loans. Check the status of interlibrary loan requests, notify appropriate stakeholders about lost materials, and contact patrons to follow-up on requests that cannot be filled.
- Review and update collection and patron records.
- Perform collection duties including tidying and shelving.
- Assist in ensuring the library environment is a source of community pride and a secure environment for patrons, staff, and library materials.
- Conduct all circulation desk duties while keeping personal conversations to a minimum.
- Provide an exceptional level of customer service while using appropriate customer service skills (e.g., confidentiality, sensitivity).
- Other duties as assigned.
Technology:
- One-to-one technology troubleshooting for patrons on Library and personal devices.
- Develop and deliver technology instruction for patrons in a variety of settings, as requested by the Director.
- Assist Technology Staff by setting up, maintaining, and troubleshooting technology (hardware and software) throughout the Library, as needed or requested: Patron access and staff computers, other library-owned devices, and technology in the teen and family rooms.
- Know how to use, inspect, and troubleshoot copiers, fax, printers, and other equipment.
Collection Development & Maintenance:
- Evaluate, recommend, and assist with the acquisition, processing, and cataloging of new materials and resources, and deaccessioning of older materials at the request of Cataloger or Director.
- Inform collection development staff of gaps in collections in order to maintain an appealing, current, and useful collection.
- Read shelves periodically during work hours to make sure all library materials are in the proper place.
- Assist with inventories.
- Work with other collection development staff to create publicity materials such as posters, bookmarks, electronic newsletters and other display materials.
- Receive ordered materials, unpack materials, and notify Cataloger when materials are ready to be processed.
- Monitor and use listserv communications to dispose of extra materials or claim relevant materials from other libraries.
Marketing:
- Update the community calendar on lvpl.org (weekly) using information from local newspapers and other community calendars.
- Maintain the library’s emails by checking them daily, responding to requests in a timely manner, and updating accounts with information about upcoming events.
- Assist staff with development of displays and booklists.
- Manage, direct, and implement marketing campaigns, as requested by the Director.
- Assist as a community liaison to promote library services and programs through tours, demonstrations, presentations, and displays.
- Assist with providing website and social media content.
- Create graphics and flyers as needed. Knowledge of Canva preferred.
Programming – When time allows, at the request of the Director:
- May plan and implement public programs with assistance from volunteers and other staff.
- May assist with special projects and or programs both in and outside the library.
- May assist with measuring and evaluating library services and programs.
Administrative Support:
- Implement day-to-day operations and functions of the Library.
- Check and respond to telephone and email messages daily.
- Daily sorting and processing of mail.
- Assist Director and Administrative Specialist in their duties, as requested.
- Contribute to strategic plan and long term goals.
- Suggest revisions and updates to procedures and forms.
- Use Microsoft and Google platforms for record keeping and reporting library activities.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities – An excellent sense of humor and a high level of patience are required:
- Working knowledge of professional library principles, practices, functions, methods, and administration is preferred.
- Strong computer and technical skills.
- Excellent organizational skills, strong work-ethic, and willingness to learn new skills.

- Evening and weekend availability is required.
Education and Experience:
Required: High School Diploma
Desired: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
One year library or related customer service experience is preferred.
Work Environment and Physical Demands:
The successful candidate will be able to:
- Work primarily in library and/or community settings.
- Regularly sit, stand, walk, use hands to handle or feel, lift and/or move 20 pounds, talk and hear.
- Regularly reach, lift and move arms above shoulder level.
- Occasionally bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb or balance.
- Occasionally lift and/or move materials weighing up to 40 pounds.
- Continuous and repetitive arm, hand and eye movement.
- Moderate to loud noise levels.

Duties:
- Select and purchase books, magazines, and digital media for youth patrons of various ages and reading levels.
- Plan and lead interactive and educational library programs, such as storytime, book clubs, and summer reading programs.
- Promote the library and reading among youth and parents through outreach and collaborations with schools, community organizations, and local businesses.
