READ ON! Contra dancing is a social event. A contra dance is made up of long lines of couples. In a dance each dancer has one partner, and also interacts with many different people, or neighbors. Follow the movement pattern of the dance with your set and your line. There is no required footwork.

Most people find contra dancing easier to learn than other forms of social dancing. Almost all contra dances are danced to live music. Generally, a leader, known as a caller, will teach each individual dance just before the music for that dance begins.
The dancers repeat the sequence of the dance a number of times. Once a couple reaches the end of the set, they switch places and direction, and re-enter the set, dancing back the way they came. When that dance ends people thank their partners, choose new partners and do the next dance.
