The Spanish Peaks Half Marathon and 5K Fun Run takes place on Saturday October 3.
Physical Distancing is the new normal in our time of COVID-19 and the 2020 Half Marathon has been redesigned to minimize the risk of everyone involved. Here are just some of the arrangements we’ve made to enhance your safety:
✓ Out and back course to avoid shuttling and carpooling to the start
✓ Individualized (one minute apart) start times with adjusted electronic chip finish time – creating a physically distanced rather than a group start. You will be assigned a unique start time based on the order of registration. (e.g., 8:00, 8:01, 8:02…)
✓ 10 foot distancing passing rule which is easily achieved on the course
✓Availability of hand sanitizer, frequent sanitizing of surfaces including porta-potties, tables, etc.
✓Water & sports drink will be available but runners may elect to provide their own refreshments as many do for their training runs
✓ Participants are invited to offer other suggestions to accommodate their special needs. (Email us and we will consider your ideas, e.g., home made bibs)
This year’s out and back course should virtually guarantee the elusive “negative split” with a gradual outbound ascent totaling 730 feet of elevation gain and a smooth, even downhill cruise when the first half work is done. It is noteworthy that the outbound terminal point of the course is reached just BEFORE the road to Cuchara begins to climb significantly and this is arguably at the most scenic area of the famed Highway of Legends with the stone dike formations looming to the east.
The Half Marathon, a RaBaCinco event, starts and finishes at La Veta Town Park. Runners head south on Oak Street, making a right turn at Cascade, then left on Cherry Street before going right onto CO 12, the Highway of Legends. Runners proceed along the highway to the turnaround point, 6.55 miles from the start, returning on the same route to the finish line in La Veta Town Park along Oak Street, just north of Ryus Street.
The 5K begins at 8:30, and starts along the same route as the Half Marathon, but from CO 12 goes into the Grandote golf course. Runners proceed to the turnaround point, returning on the same route to the finish line in La Veta Town Park along Oak Street, just north of Ryus Street.
